Indonesian Grasshoppers
Most of these come from one location, a field near my house in west Jakarta. Grasshoppers like grass but Jakarta doesn’t.
(above) Long-headed Toothpick Grasshopper Acrida cinerea – There are lots of these in the field near my house. In Indonesia they are called Belalang Pocong, “pochong” is the ghost of a person wrapped in the shroud that muslims use to bury the dody of their dead. Collected – 6°09’12.02”S, 106°41’33.02”E – 11th Sep 2011
(above) Long-headed Toothpick Grasshopper Acrida cinerea – I think this is a nymph as it’s wingless and quiet small compared to the other Toothpicks. It has turned a darker colour since pinning, it was more of a sandy brown when alive. Collected – 6°09’12.02”S, 106°41’33.02”E – 11th Sep 2011
(above and right) This is a big grasshopper. My cat brought me this as a little present. It’s a Spur-throated grasshopper but I’m struggling with any clues as to the genus or species. Collected – 6°08’58.26”S 106°41’43.35”E – 21st Oct 2011
(above) Found this at Anyer beach west Java. It landed on a white plastic chair while I was sitting near the beach. Collected – 6°10’59.32”S, 105°50’34.92”E – 3rd Dec 2011
(above) I couldn’t spread the wings as this one was caught by an old man who works in the field I was collecting in. For some reason he pinched the wings and ripped them off, after he picked it off some long grass. Collected – 6°09’05”S, 106°41’35”E – 29th Aug 2011
(above) Vegetable Grasshopper Atractomorpha crenulata – This one landed on a potted plant that is on my porch. I think the plant is Pleomele Reflexa, a type of Dracaena. Collected – 6°08’58”S, 106°41’43”E – 15th Aug 2011
